Ultram is an oral pain reliever, mainly to get relief from back pain. It may be prescribed to get relief from mild to moderate pain and chronic pain as a result of surgery and chronic conditions like cancer. It is a stronger pain reliever than acetaminophen and has a weak narcotic effect. It acts centrally by modulating the sensation of pain.
How to take it
Regularly prescribed dose is 1-2 50 mg tablets every four hours, not to exceed 8 tablets per day. Exceeding this dosage may lead to complications, such as seizures and respiratory depression. Take it with a glass of water. It can be consumed with or without food. It has to be taken orally as a whole, do not crush or break it. Using this medicine as an inhalation or injection can prove fatal.
Precautions
If you have kidney or liver disease, you must discuss it with your doctor. In addition, if you have a history of alcohol or drug dependence confide in your doctor. In such cases, monitoring the dose may be required. It is not known, whether the drug can harm an unborn baby, still it is better to discuss with the doctor if you are planning a pregnancy. It is also not clear whether it passes into breast milk, so be cautious if you are breast-feeding the baby. Moreover, people over 75 years may have serious side effects. The drug cannot be given to children aged below 16 years.
Drug interactions
Care must be taken if the patient is taking anti depressants as this drug in combination with anti depressants can lead to seizures. An MAO inhibitor like isocarboxacid, tranylcypromine, Phenelzine or anti depressants like citalopram, clomipramine, and imipramine will have drug interactions with Ultram. There may be other drugs, which may interact with Ultram. Therefore, give full details about all the supplements, other medicines you are taking to the doctor before starting this medication.
Side effects
This drug should not be taken with alcohol, tranquilizers and sedatives as it may impair physical and mental functions. Pregnant women should not take it. Some people experience mood upswings and unusual feelings while under this medication. Speech disorders, stomatitis, blurred vision, upset stomach, diarrhea, numbness of feet, itching of face, drowsiness, head ache, migraine, gastrointestinal bleeding, fast heartbeat, seizures, changes in urination are some other side effects. Call your doctor at once, if you experience serious side effects.
What to avoid
Narcotic medicine, cold and allergy medicine, sleeping pills, tranquilizers must be avoided while taking this drug. Be careful if you have to drive and while pursuing other activities that require alertness.
Storage
The drug must be stored between 25-30 degrees centigrade and in an airtight container. Store it away from extreme moisture and heat.
Overdose
In case of an overdose, seek emergency help. An overdose symptom includes difficulty in breathing, seizures etc. In case of a missed dose, take it when you remember or if it is already time for the regular dose take the regular dose alone. Do not take an overdose.
